Plan a water-level sensor before buying hardware

Buying the sensing element is only one part of a water-monitoring installation. The measurement must fit the tank and reach software that knows how to interpret it.

Measure the installation constraints

Record tank shape, maximum depth, available space above the full water level, nearby pipes, power availability and the distance to your network. Identify whether the water is intended for drinking and ask the supplier about material suitability for that use.

Plan inspection and maintenance without entering a tank. Installation near stored water and electrical equipment needs appropriate methods and qualified help where required. This planning guide does not provide wiring or confined-space procedures.

Compare the measurement approaches

A non-contact ultrasonic sensor measures a distance through the air above the water. Its minimum clearance, sensing angle and mounting geometry matter. A submerged pressure probe measures a quantity related to water depth and needs an appropriate range, cable and installation.

DFRobot’s A02YYUW specifies a 3–450 cm distance range and a 60° sensing angle. Those specifications invite a concrete question: will the intended mounting position see the water without problematic walls or obstructions? Resolution should not be confused with accuracy.

Draw the complete data path

Two proposed architectures

Nearby tank: ultrasonic sensor → suitable controller → local network → data receiver → volume conversion → dashboard.

Distant tank: radio sensor → matching gateway → network server → application adapter → volume conversion → dashboard.

Each arrow needs an implemented, tested interface. A Raspberry Pi does not become a LoRaWAN gateway simply because it has Wi-Fi. A sensor listed in another platform’s documentation does not automatically send data to Sunstead.

Treat current candidates as research leads

Sunstead lists the A02YYUW, Dragino DDS75-LB/LS and Milesight EM500-SWL as integration candidates. The proposed water ingestion and physical setups have not been implemented and validated for Sunstead.

ESPHome documents the A02YYUW UART sensor. Dragino documents its DDS75 radio distance sensor, while Milesight documents the submerged EM500-SWL. Check exact variant, regional radio band, range and gateway requirements with the manufacturer before buying.

Define acceptance before installation

  • The raw distance or depth agrees with an independent reference.
  • The full and low operating ranges are measurable.
  • The volume conversion matches the tank geometry.
  • Readings arrive with useful timestamps.
  • Missing or stale data is visibly different from an empty tank.
  • The enclosure, power and communications suit the location.

Keep a calibration record across several known levels, not just one full-tank point. Investigate discrepancies before relying on a calculated reserve.

Sunstead’s existing water display remains a demo of assumed values and does not control a pump. A future real integration must earn trust through the complete acceptance checks above; a product listing is not evidence that it already has.
