Troubleshooting
The inverter is visible but the battery is missing
Reading an inverter does not automatically create a separate BMS connection. First identify which battery information you expected and where it should come from.
Name the missing information
Is the missing item a battery icon, pack current, state of charge, cell voltage, temperature or an entire pack identity? These are different questions. An inverter can expose some battery-related values through its own protocol while direct BMS details remain unavailable.
Write the exact field and expected source. “Battery voltage from inverter available; cell values from BMS unavailable” is a useful description. “Battery not working” is too broad and can imply an equipment failure that monitoring has not established.
Check the communication architecture
Record the inverter monitoring connection and any separate BMS monitoring connection. The battery-to-inverter communications link used by the equipment is not automatically a PC monitoring interface. Do not disconnect or repurpose it based on connector appearance.
The Modbus serial specification distinguishes protocol and serial implementation details. A connector shape or mention of Modbus alone does not establish the correct cable, address or register map for a specific battery.
Verify the exact battery revision
Collect the battery model, hardware revision and BMS firmware if accessible through normal documentation or software. Compare the supported Sunstead reader with that exact combination. Brand-level compatibility is insufficient when revisions use different interfaces or data formats.
Two separate evidence rows
Inverter: identified, supported reader, fresh values. Battery: model known, revision unknown, no independent BMS response confirmed. The next task is identifying the battery’s documented monitoring interface, not reinstalling the working inverter reader.
Distinguish discovery from useful response
A visible USB adapter or Bluetooth advertisement only proves that part of the connection is visible. It does not prove that the expected device protocol is responding with valid telemetry.
Check whether a supported reader establishes the device identity and receives current values. For multiple packs, record how many are detected and how many are responding. Do not assume one successful pack means the entire installed bank is represented.
Prepare the compatibility question
- Exact inverter and battery models and revisions.
- Which battery-related fields the inverter already supplies.
- The documented BMS monitoring port and protocol.
- Adapter model and connection method.
- Device identity, response state and timestamps.
- The specific missing fields.
Share sanitized screenshots and exact errors. Keep serial numbers, network details and access tokens private unless needed through an appropriate support channel.
Do not change battery protection, charge or communication settings merely to make a dashboard populate. Follow equipment documentation and qualified support for any configuration change. The monitoring investigation should first establish whether the expected data has a supported path to the host.
