Networks & access
Find the correct local address for your monitor
The address belongs to the host on your network. Copying an address from an example or another property can send you to the wrong place.
Use the address shown by the application
On the Sunstead host, open Remote & displays and look for its local access information. Copy the complete displayed URL, including the scheme and application port. The usual hostname form is http://sunstead.local:8765, but use your installation’s actual value.
Open it from a device on the same trusted local network. A phone using mobile data is not a valid test of that local path. Neither is an isolated guest network that intentionally blocks access to household devices.
Understand the three parts
The hostname or numeric IP identifies the host. The port selects the service. The scheme tells the browser how to connect. Leaving off the application port can reach no service at all even when the host address is correct.
Raspberry Pi’s remote-access documentation explains local IP discovery and .local hostname resolution. A hostname depends on name resolution; a numeric address avoids that particular step but can change when the network assigns addresses again.
Compare hostname and current IP carefully
What a comparison tells you
If the current numeric address with the correct port opens the dashboard but the hostname does not, the application is reachable and hostname resolution deserves attention. If neither works, the cause may be the network path, wrong address or unavailable service.
Do not label every failed hostname as a broken Pi. Also avoid treating a responding numeric address as proof of identity: verify the property and equipment shown after the page opens.
Use the router’s device list as supporting evidence
If you administer the local network, inspect its connected-device list for the known host. Match more than a vague device name when several Pis are present. A saved installation record can help identify the intended device.
On a Pi with authorized terminal access, hostname -I displays assigned addresses. Several may appear because the host has multiple interfaces. Choose the address belonging to the network your viewing device can reach; do not copy a loopback or unrelated interface address.
Fix the bookmark after verifying the path
- Confirm the viewing device’s network.
- Confirm the host’s current address.
- Include the documented application port.
- Verify the property identity and fresh readings.
- Save a clearly named bookmark.
If addresses change frequently, the network administrator can consider an appropriate address reservation using the router’s documentation. Do not assign a random static address that might conflict with another device.
Keep local access local. Opening the dashboard port to the public internet is not the remedy for a household bookmark problem. Sunstead’s optional remote viewing uses its own account and pairing workflow.
